A Genesee County Mom’s Guide to September!

Where has this year gone?! Seriously. How can it already be SEPTEMBER {cue Green Day, “Wake Me Up When September Ends“}? 

If your child{ren} haven’t already gone back-to-school, chances are they will be soon. But just because school is back in session, doesn’t mean that the fun has to end! 

 

Check out happenings in and around Genesee County this September.

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month!  Celebrate with the Genesee District Library by visiting any of its branches and signing up for the smartest card you’ll ever need. After signing up, be sure to grab a discount sheet showing area restaurants, museums, florists and coffee shops that will be offering discounts with it!

September also kicks off fall, y’all!  Apple orchards, apple-picking, cider, donuts, oh my! Stayed tuned to GCMB for more detailed posts in all of these areas and more.

September 1-7, 2017

Join us at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad as we say Farewell to Summer! September 1 – September 4 will be your last chance to enjoy summer activities in the village. Vintage rides for the kids, including the Mott Lake Flyer and pony carts. But that’s not all: tour homes, trades buildings, ride the Huckleberry Railroad and view history-inspired treasures. Tickets range from $9 to $11 and can be purchased here

Head over to Flushing County Park, Pavilion 1 on September 1 for some FREE, no pre-registration required, FUN! For-Mar on the Road Truck Farm:  Grow A Rainbow!  Your child{ren}, ages 4 – 12, will have a chance to get into all the beauty and color that has grown in the community garden this summer.

You will probably tire of my excitement over this one, but in our home, it is a HUGE hit. The Home Depot Kids Workshop will be in full-force on September 2, just in time for back-to-school. Head to your local Home Depot to make a pencil box this month! This is a FREE event, but you must register {do so here}!

Start your Labor Day weekend off right. Head out to the Clarkston Area Farmers Market this morning for some Family Yoga.  After taking the hour to find your zen, hit the market to find flowers or fresh fruits and veggies to fill your weekend!

September 2, For-Mar’s favorite beekeeper, Jim Withers from Withers Mountain Honey Farm will be onsite to open-up the learning hives to check on the busy bees. Meet us at the apiary in the arboretum for this FREE, all-ages event!

Do you have a budding photographer? Check-out the Shutterbugs:  Kids Nature Photography class at For-Mar on September 2. This is a monthly club in which kids, ages 5 and older, bring their own digital cameras and take to the trails for some learning and picture-taking of live animals and nature in general. Pre-registration is required and cost is $3 per student.

September 3, from 12p – 4p, join us for the 7th Annual Monticello Plaza Car Cruise in Swartz Creek! Supporting cancer awareness, this event will have a DJ, door prizes, giveaways and more. Stop out and see some neat cars and enjoy the afternoon with family and friends all while supporting a good cause.

Summer is winding down, and such is the case at Upland Hills Farm, too. Come out on Sunday, September 3, for Summer Sundays from 12p to 5p. The cost is $9/person and gets you admission to the farm, a hayride and a “meet and greet” with the farm animals. Bring your picnic lunch or visit the concessions stands onsite, but don’t miss this fun afternoon out!

We love to get outside and be active! Meet at 10a on September 5 at the Visitor’s Center of For-Mar for some stretching and a story before hitting the trails with your tot{s}! Cost is $2 per person.

September 6 has been dubbed as “Good Neighbor Day.” Stop out at Bentley Florist in Burton and receive one dozen roses  for FREE. The catch? You keep just one single rose for yourself and give the others to 11 people. Be a good neighbor and spread some cheer and flowers! Doors open at 9a and will go until 12p, or while supplies last.

September 8 – September 14

September 2nd Friday Artwalk will happen in beautiful downtown Flint on September 8. Organized by the Greater Flint Arts Council, this is a FREE event to promote diversity of offerings in the area. Come out for food, entertainment and more. We hope to see you there!

The event that women from Genesee County and surrounding areas look forward to every year is here. Join us September 8 and 9 at Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center for the Women’s Expo!

It is beginning to “smell” like Fall!  Join us on September 10 from 10a to 5p at the Not 2 Shabby Red Barn in Flint for Shabby Sunday Vintage Fall Market. There will be repurposed handcrafted antiques by many talented artists – you won’t be disappointed!

The Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the Taste of Grand Blanc! Join us at the Captain’s Club at Woodfield on September 12 from 5p to 8p for great food, a live band, chef demonstrations and more! Tickets can be purchased at the chamber office or website in advance for $15 or $20 at the door.

Are you in need of a Girls Night Out? Or maybe a date night with your significant other? Head over to Elwood’s in Burton on September 14 for “Lush with a Brush.” The painting event will kick off at 6:30p, creating your own 16″x20″ masterpiece of “Day of the Dead” with your favorite cocktail in hand. RSVP to guarantee your spot and I hope to see you there!

September 15 – September 21

What’s better than your local farmers market? When your local Chamber of Commerce hosts a Drive-In Movie at the Market! Join the Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce and the Oakland County Farmers Market on September 15 for a drive-in. Doors will open at 5p. Come early and enjoy food trucks, inflatables, farmers’ market vendors and more! Then at dusk, the movie will play. Set your radio in your car to hear the movie through your speakers, just like an old-fashioned drive-in movie. Don’t want to sit in your car?  Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit ahead of the cars to watch the movie from the ground. This is sure to be a hit!

Can’t make it to the Oakland County Farmers Market? No worries! Your Flint Farmers Market will be home to the 3rd Annual Hispanic Festival on September 15 from 6p – 9p.  Come on out for some ethnic food, entertainment, vendors, artists and more! 

Work off your popcorn or Hispanic cuisine from last night at the Dog Dip & Pooch to 5k Run/Walk this morning from 9a – 2p at Lake Callis in Davison. With the season coming to an end, they are making a day of fun for you and your dog. This event will lead off at 9a with the Pooch to 5k. There will be several dog and owner related activities and demonstrations, vendor booths, contests, and more. A portion of money raised at this event will benefit the Davison Area Dog Park. Be sure to register ahead of time!

It’s that time of year again! Fall Festivals galore! Join us September 16 for the FOX66 Fall Festival 2017 at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center. Mark your calendars for this RAIN or SHINE event {not that it matters because this event will be held 100% indoors}. Activities include a petting zoo, face painting, Kidcaster {meet the news team}, Characters {think princesses and superheros}, Michigan Child ID Program, scavenger hunt and MORE! And did I mention this is a totally FREE event? FREE admission and FREE parking!  We hope to see you there.

September 16 and 17 will be days filled with rich history as you venture the beautiful grounds of Olde World Canterbury Village in Lake Orion. Join us from 10a – 5p and celebrate Heritage Festival 2017! Games, crafts, magicians, bounce houses, live music, history, photo booth and more. Not to mention Yates Cider Mill will be onsite with cider and donuts to kick off the fall season just right.

Eat Healthy, Eat Tasty! Come on out to the Flint Farmers Market on September 19 for a Fall Garden Veggie Demo:  Turnip the Beet. Nutritionists from MSU Extension will create dishes that highlight the beauty and taste of these wonderful cool weather veggies. 

September 22 – September 28

The Flint Institute of Arts will host its 10th Annual Art on Tap event on September 23. This is a casual affair under a large tent that will feature a multitude of micro, specialty and premium brews, along with beer cuisine and live music.  Tickets range from $35 to $45 and can be purchased here.

Hosted by the Ruth Mott Foundation at Applewood, the Fall Harvest Festival will take place beginning at 11a on September 23. Come out to this FREE event to participate in a variety of activities including live music, strolling entertainment, mini pumpkin decorating, educational presentations, games and more!

Diehl’s Orchard & Cider Mill in Holly will host Ciderfest 2017 September 23 – September 24, from 9a to 6p. Be sure to mark your calendars and follow their event page for this don’t want to miss event of the season.

It started mid-August when a friend of mine posted on Instagram, “Guess what time it is?” Do you know? All things Pumpkin Spice!  The Flint Farmers Market will host another Fall Garden Veggie Demo:  Mashing Pumpkins, on September 26. Although Halloween is still about a month away, it isn’t too early to start thinking about our jack-o-lantern’s. MSU Extension will teach us to make a couple of dishes with our pumpkins that they claim will be “more treat than trick.” Come join us. Eat Healthy, Eat Tasty!

Genesee County Moms Blog and the Flint Children’s Museum are hosting a playdate on September 27 from 11a-1p! Join some of the GCMB mamas and our little ones for a couple of hours of fun.  Stay tuned for more and updated information!

September 29 – September 30

Join us with at the Mt Morris Branch of the Genesee District Library for Story Time with Miss Sandy on September 29 at 10a!

Join us for Cycling Circles 2017 on September 30. This is the second annual FREE event held at the Chevy Commons, designed for families with young children. Hit the awesome new trails, stop by for a healthy snack, bike safety tips, freebies and more! Decorate your bike to enter the “Coolest Bike Ever” contest. Make sure to bring your own helmet and bike and we’ll see you there!

Touch-A-Truck events are such a neat experience for our children. Join us on September 30 in downtown Flint at 11a for this FREE event that will be sure to be a hit in your home of little ones!

Goodrich Parks and Recreation will host it’s 1st Annual Bounce in the Park on September 30.  Come out at noon and enjoy an all-day bounce house pass for just $5. There will games, food and more. This is a fan-favorite in our home.
